Success at the September Print auction
The 30 September Print auction included a very rare drypoint of 'Looking through Brooklyn Bridge' by CRW Nevinson (Lot 64), which nearly doubled its estimate by making £20,400. A copy of this appears in the exhibition rhythms of Modern Life: British Prints 1914-1939' at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from 23 September to 7 December.
The exhibition also includes works by the Grosvenor School, in particular Sybil Andrews. The Print sale also had an extremely rare work by Andrews titled 'Wet Race meeting' (lot 99) which also sold for a strong price at the auction. It is believed that the blocks for this image were destroyed by the artist, the planned edition was 50, however only the impressions numbered 1/50 to 11/50 and three EP's (experimental proofs) were made.
Generally the Nevinson and Andrews works fetched strong prices at the auction but some other good results included Paul Klee’s Vulgäre Komödie Lithograph for £28,800 and David Hockney R.A.’s The Blue Guitar for £19,200. For further details on these and other sale results, please contact the Print Department.
