Impressionist & Modern Art
The June Impressionist and Modern Art sale at Bonhams achieved some excellent prices. Of notable interest was a van Dongen still life and an energetic yet delicate landscape by Renoir. A collage by Picasso underlined the artist’s continual appeal to collectors, while a spontaneous and inventive gouache combined with wax, executed by Brauner during the Second World War was subject to competitive bidding. The fact that the Italian market remains buoyant was admirably demonstrated by strong pre sale interest in ‘Natura Morta con violette’ by de Pisis, which resulted in a hammer price of £36,000 against an estimate of £15,000-20,000. The sale finished on a high note with ‘La Tour Blanche’ by Man Ray selling for £34,000.
