Who are Bonhams?
Bonhams is not only the world's fastest growing auction house, founded in 1793 it is also the world's oldest and largest auctioneer of fine art and antiques still in British ownership. The name Bonhams is recognised worldwide throughout all sectors of the fine art, antiques and collectors market, and several of its departments are established world leaders within their fields. We cover a broad range of items, from paintings to motor cars and cycles, from books to porcelain and contemporary ceramics, jewellery to rivercraft.
Today, Bonhams conducts over 700 sales a year, more than any of its rivals worldwide. The company's international fine art saleroom is located in London's New Bond Street, while its other flagship London saleroom is in fashionable Knightsbridge, where sales are aimed primarily at the collectors' market. Bonhams is unique in that it offers sales and valuations not only in London, but in the provinces, with nine salerooms and 22 offices throughout the UK. In addition, regular Bonhams sales are held throughout Europe, primarily in Switzerland, Monaco and Germany.
In the U.S., Bonhams & Butterfields, the principal auction house on the West Coast, holds more than 50 auctions a year in the San Francisco and Los Angeles salerooms, featuring a range from 19th century pictures to fine jewellery. In 2003 Goodmans, one of Australia's leading auctioneers, joined the Bonhams group of companies. Bonhams & Goodmans conducts 50 sales of fine art and antiques a year in Sydney and also has representative offices in Brisbane and Perth.

Tell me more about the Motoring Department
The Bonhams International Motoring Department is the world's largest all-encompassing auctioneer to hold scheduled sales of Motor Cars, Motorcycles and related Automobilia. The department has fully staffed departments located worldwide - North America (San Francisco and New York), Australia (Sydney), Mainland Europe (Paris) and the UK (London). Click here to find your nearest contact.
The heritage of the Bonhams motoring department can trace its roots back to BROOKS - the specialist collectors' motoring auctioneers founded by Robert Brooks and James Knight in 1989. They were joined by internationally respected motor specialists Malcolm Barber and Stewart Skillbeck in 1994. Brooks Auctioneers merged with Bonhams during 1999 and Phillips, London in 2001 forming the third largest global traditional Auction House. The Bonhams' Motoring Department retains a strong strategic importance to the Bonhams group.
Bonhams offers you the most dynamic, widely respected and experienced specialists and consultants in the market. We provide complete global representation. We offer you the best venues (almost always in association with a prestigious motoring event to maximise market exposure); PLUS the most international, broadly-targeted marketing and advertising; PLUS the background muscle of the Bonhams brand and all that it stands for - integrity, commitment, flexibility, professionalism, track record and sales success.
Clients can appoint Bonhams knowing their prized possession will benefit from simply the best service in the industry, maximising their prospects to generate the very best price. Whatever your requirement, from individual item to entire collection, our specialists will provide you with all the assistance you need. We offer complementary auction estimates and advice without obligation. Other services include official valuations for insurance, probate, market and family division.

Where do you hold your Sales?
Bonhams is pretty much unique in conducting Sales in association with carefully selected - and in several cases co-created - motoring events. The list is long and varied. Click here to see the Sales Calendar.
In the UK, we hold Sales at both the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival meetings, at Aston Martin Lagonda Limited, with the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club, Silverstone Classic, the RAF Museum Hendon, the Veteran Car Club/RAC London to Brighton Run and the international Autojumble at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu. In Continental Europe we hold Sales at Retromobile, Paris, in Monaco to coincide the Grand Prix Historique and in Gstaad, Switzerland. In the US, we hold Sales in collaboration with the Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles and The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering in Carmel, CA.
We also have specialist motorcycle Sales at the Classic Motorcycle show in Stafford and at the Legend of the Motorcycle Concours d'Elegance in Half Moon Bay, California. At most of our Sales there will also be on offer select and related Automobilia.
At Bonhams we believe that the venue location is important. It means your car or motorcycle is not only marketed to Bonhams' established clientele, but to that of the event as well. Its exposure to the widest potential market is therefore greater and, in simple terms, the greater the exposure, the higher the potential price that will be achieved for your motor car. And, because our sales tend to be themed towards types or makes of car, they are more clearly focused than any other. For example, our last sale of 'London to Brighton-eligible' veteran motor cars was 100% sold with every car entered selling within or beyond its estimate.

What are the charges?
Given the global nature of our business and the breadth of our sales venues, you might be tempted to assume that our fees will be prohibitively high. This is not the case. Our fees reflect our level of service, combined with our track record of selling success. The maximum seller's commission you will ever pay selling a motor car or motorcycle with Bonhams is 10% (no commission is charged should your item fail to sell).
- Commission: 10% - reductions are available, based on volume, value and likelihood of sale and we charge NO minimum fee.
- Entry fee*: Ranging from £50/$100 to £500/$1000 depending on number of images published.
- Unsold fee Nil Bonhams do not charge an unsold fee
- Insurance Nil Bonhams do not charge an insurance fee
* Entry fee includes:
- A professionally written catalogue description of your car or motorcycle (based on information supplied by you) that is published not only in our fully illustrated colour catalogue but also posted on our website
- Illustrations in the catalogue (supplied by you, or taken by us if visiting you)
- All advertising, marketing and administrative costs
- A professional exterior valet of your car upon arrival at the sale venue
The difference in commission terms between Bonhams and the cheapest auctioneer we could find is effectively one bid - and we have every confidence that we will get you more than one bid's difference, thus giving you a better net return. Basically by offering you the best package in the industry. We will promote your car more extensively. We have the widely respected, well-known personnel, the connections and the international reach. We can offer you the best venues. We have the most comprehensive global mailing lists and the budget to advertise our sales and to promote your car more widely. We have a good and respectable name in the industry that instils confidence in buyers to bid on your car. If you are in any doubt we welcome you to compare our prices realised to those of our competitors. You will note that we sell a better percentage and you will also note that we sell a better percentage within, or higher than, our pre-sale estimates.

How do I consign an item for sale?
Ideally, just contact Bonhams motoring department on tel. 020 7468 5801 and have a private chat with one of the specialists there. Alternatively you can email us at ukcars@bonhams.com
Whichever you choose, we will want you to provide us with a feeling for condition, history and originality of your car. We should then be able to give you a rough estimate of value and advise on the best Bonhams auction sale for your motor car.
You may want to place a reserve on your car (the confidential minimum price you require) and that can also be discussed. As a result of this preliminary contact the specialist will either arrange to send you an entry pack or arrange a visit to assist you in consigning your car to a Bonhams sale (these visits are free of charge).
The entry pack will contain useful information about Bonhams and the relevant Sale (such as Sale dates, delivery dates, transport recommendations etc). It will also include a Vehicle Entry Form. The entry form is a simple questionnaire and provides us with your name/address/contact details, and then details of your car.
Once this has been received by Bonhams the specialist will contact you to discuss your car in greater detail and to firm up our preliminary thoughts. A completed version that notes the auction estimate, agreed reserve (if any), signed and dated by you and accepted by Bonhams, then forms a contract consigning your car to that particular Sale. On its reverse, our Vehicle Entry Form also lists our full Conditions of Business.
The Bonhams specialist with whom you have spoken will be your personal contact leading up to, during, and post Sale. You will benefit from this one-to-one relationship and our objective will be to work with you to achieve the very best price for your motor car.
