Footnote:
Painted in the early-mid 1890's, this is a characteristic example of McTaggart's mature period. It explores the artist's keynote theme of fisher children and their natural environment, worked up 'en plein air' despite the imposing scale of the canvas. McTaggart was fascinated by the ever-changing sea and weather, and has employed a pink/cocoa coloured ground which imparts a hazy warmth to the scene.
NOTE: This lot was included in the Scottish sale 2009 catalogue, but was not offered in the sale as the deceased estate was not finalised.
