Provenance: A gift from James Henry Sellers (1861-1954), furniture designer and architect, to his wife, Sarah Mills, and by descent through the family. A self-taught architect and designer, Sellers formed a partnership with Edgar Wood (1860-1935), and together they executed a number of commissions in and around Manchester, concentrating on small innovative commercial and domestic buildings and their interiors. It is believed that they also showed a number of pieces of furniture at the Arts and Crafts Society Exhibitions.
