Footnote:
It is uncertain at what date Fred Hall actually settled in Newlyn but Stanhope Forbes first acknowledged his presence in 1885. In 1884 he exhibited An Orchard near Newlyn, Cornwall at the Royal Academy and in 1893 a letter firmly claimed that he had then 'been ten years a Newlyner'.1 The present lot was therefore certainly painted while Hall was still in Newlyn, and depicts a theme that Hall would revisit throughout the 1890s, in works such as The end of the day (RA, 1891), Homeward (RA, 1893), and The Shepherd (RA, 1895).
