Footnote:
This Shahrizabz susani is the best example of its type to appear at auction in recent years. Shahrizabz susanis are distinguished by their rich and vibrant colour palette. Their designs consist of flowering plants, palmettes, foliage and meandering tendrils, and are stylistically influenced by textiles being produced at Bokhara, Nurata and Samarkand, other towns on the Silk Route. Borders often include a motif depicted in the central field. For a related susani from Shahrisabz with the given date of 1870 see Stickereien aus Mittelasien, Exhibition Catalogue, Mannheim, 3rd-13th April 1981, p. 43.
