Provenance: Trustfonds van die Hoer Meisieskool.
This work is being offered on behalf of a trust established for the benefit of the Bloemhof Girls High School, Stellenbosch.
In the winter of 1936 Laubser visited Natal and added fresh themes to her work. Her studies of exotic Indian girls, in which flower motifs are employed as decorative surrounds, are marked by a distant dreamlike quality.
Maggie's Indian girls illustrate a conscious departure from the penetrating emotional exposure of the earlier works. Physical beauty as such began to influence her choice of models and subject matter. Mystical eyes dominate these compositions. Inviolate innocence and a mysterious inner quiet hallmark the Indian studies.
