Estimate: £30,000 - 34,000

Footnote:
Almost certainly influenced by collaborators Citroen, Maserati broke away from their front-engined tradition, in 1970, by introducing two new mid-engined Grand Tourers, the Bora and the Merak - at the time, only the Lamborghini Miura and the Lotus Europa sought sales in this sector. Although Alfiero Giulio was responsible for both the layout and the all-round independent suspension by coil springs and double wishbones, body styling and the design of the Bora’s unitary construction were the work of Giugiaro’s new Ital Design studio. The Bora engine was the well tried 330bhp 4.7-litres V8, the capacity of which was increased to 4.9 from 1975. Thus equipped, the Italian GT could reach 60mph in 6.5 seconds and be capable of 158mph.
A total of 571 Boras were built in Modena between 1971 and 1980. Of the total of 290 4.7-powered Boras produced, only thirty were made in right-hand drive, among them this early example. Formerly green, the two-door coupe bodywork has been repainted red in recent years, though the off-white leather seats are still the originals. According to a very large history file, previous owners were Michael James Miles of Andover, William Roy Constable of Hessle and, from April 1985, London stockbroker Angus Milne, who also owned a Maserati Indy, the car only passing directly into current ownership earlier this year.
Service invoices from leading marque specialist Bill McGrath detail extensive work carried out 6 October and 3 November 1997, 17 October 2005 and 25 May 2007. Also present are 18 MOTs going back to 1986, when the recorded mileage was 53,168, which had risen to only 69,361 by 2007. The latest certificate is valid until autumn 2009 and, being of 1972 manufacture, this stylish Italian is eligible for an historic vehicle tax disc.
