Footnote:
In 1915 Ryosuki Namiki founded a small factory near Tokyo to produce gold pen nibs. In 1918 he was joined by Masao Wada and they formed the Namiki Manufacturing Company Ltd. In 1925 they patented a process to apply lacquer to the bodies of pens to protect them from scratching and fading. In 1926 they introduced the ancient art of Maki-e; the technique of dusting precious metal powder onto wet lacquer. The managing director of Dunhill's Paris branch, Clement Court, had a love for Japanese art and once introduced to namiki's products, was so taken with them, he immediately began importing them to his store. They were sold under the brand name 'Dunhill-Namiki' and were so popular that in 1930 an agreement was signed to give Dunhill distribution rights outside of Japan.
