New Bond Street

Lot No: 173
The Winterfold House Service The family history of the vendor suggests that this service was originally purchased for Winterfold House, Chaddesley Corbett, Worcestershire. In 1765, Ann Taylor married William Wheeler and the couple lived together at Winterfold House, the set presumably having been acquired by the previous generation. Their daughter, Ann, married Rev Thomas Harward, curate of Rushock, Worcestershire, in 1813. The couple also lived at Winterfold and the service has passed by descent to the present vendor
A Worcester sucrier and cover
circa 1758-60
From the Winterfold House service, of shallow circular form with crisp moulding of spiral flutes and ozier borders in Meissen style, the finial formed by an apple on a woody stem, painted in colours with scattered sprays and sprigs of European flowers, another spray within the interior, 11cm high (small patch of wear to the finial) (2)

Sold for £1,680 inclusive of Buyer's Premium

Footnote:
This unusual shape, inspired by Meissen, was first used earlier in the 1750s and must have been reissued for use in conjunction with this slightly later Meissen style of decoration, prior to the introduction of the more standard sucrier form bearing a flower finial.
