The ex-George Barris, Knight Rider 1984 Pontiac Firebird 'KITT' Chassis no. tba
Cars have been featured in films since the first motorized buggies were incorporated into early silent shorts. In some movies and television shows, a specific vehicle has even played an integral role as part of the show, acting as centerpiece of the performance or even a stand-alone character. One such example is the 1984 Pontiac Firebird on offer here, which played the role of KITT (short for Knight Industries Two Thousand) on episodes of the television show Knight Rider.
The Knight Rider TV series ran from September of 1982 until August of 1986. David Hasselhoff played Michael Knight opposite the real star, KITT. KITT was a 300-mph, high-tech, self-aware, communicative, man-made marvel, designed to aid and protect Michael. Together with his human co-star, KITT fought for justice across America.
While on the show, KITT is credited as being the creation of eccentric billionaire Wilton Knight, in reality, the modified black 1982 Pontiac Firebird was designed by Michael Scheffe who also worked on Back to the Future: Part II to create the futuristic landscape portrayed in that movie. KITT's defining characteristic was the strip of red lights that was inset on his nose and flashed when he spoke, an element that was inspired by HAL 9000, the famous computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The example offered here represents a later incarnation of the car that was further modified by 'Kustom King' George Barris.
This car was initially used in the third season of the series and was re-converted to simulate the 'Super Pursuit Mode' variant of KITT that was used in the Knight Rider 2010 made for television movie (1994) and for exhibition and promotional purposes. One of KITT's many technologies, the 'Super Pursuit Mode' was designed to give KITT a 40 percent increase in speed through the assistance of retractable airfoils and jet boosters. Inside, a panel of lights and screens depicted a look at the future of automotive technology—a future that now seems far less distant.
More recently, this car was used in the 2006 feature motion picture The Benchwarmers. This is the only Super Pursuit Mode car left and represents a unique opportunity to own a well known piece of television history.
