Elizabeth I and the Earl of Leicester Return to Bonhams in Edinburgh

http://www.bonhams.com/miniatures

Bonhams are delighted to announce that they will be exhibiting a pair of highly important portrait miniatures of Elizabeth I, Queen of England and her favourite Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester at their galleries in Edinburgh's Queen Street on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November.

These miniatures were last seen in Edinburgh in 2005, when they were exhibited at the SCOTTISH NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY as part of the Merchiston Collection of Fine Portrait Miniatures. The tiny pair of miniatures, measuring only 18mm high, date to 1575 the pivotal year in the relationship between the Queen and Leicester, it being the year that he relinquished all hope of becoming her husband. The miniatures are expected to realise £60,000-£80,000 when they are offered for sale in November.

The two day exhibition in Edinburgh will also feature other highlights from the Merchiston Collection, including works by Scottish miniaturists such as Alexander Gallaway, John Bogle and Andrew Robertson.
