Bronze Bust of Churchill Which George VI Persuaded Him to Sit For - In Bonhams Sale

http://www.bonhams.com/furniture

A bust of Sir Winston Churchill by Sir William Reid Dick and a late George III beechwood chair from Sir Winston's home in Kent, are two historic items in Bonhams sale of Fine English Furniture and Works of Art in Bond Street on 18 November.

The bust by Sir William Reid Dick; British (1879-1961) is a bronze portrait head of Sir Winston Churchill on an integral plinth base, inscribed W REID DICK/1942. The 11" high bust is estimated to sell for £3,000-5,000.

The Royal Academy commissioned a bronze of Churchill from Reid Dick in 1942 and it was reputedly only after the intervention of George VI that Churchill could be persuaded to take the time to sit for Reid Dick. The plaster maquette for this sculpture was sold at Bonhams, London, 16 March 2004.

The second Churchill item in this sale is Lot 219, a late George III beechwood open armchair with an arched top-rail above a pierced spindle filled back and downswept arms on inswept supports, above an upholstered seat and squab cushion, on ring turned tapering legs. Estimate £1,000-1,500.

Following the death of Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) the chair was sold as part of his estate by Knight Frank and Rutley. The sale included pictures, drawings and prints, European and Oriental porcelain, antique and reproduction furniture and ornamental on 19th January 1966. It was purchased by the antique dealer John Day of Burlington Arcade, London and thence by family descent.
