Bonhams' Buoyant Wine Prices Show the UK's Rising Spirits
http://www.bonhams.com/wine

Economic gloom is never far from the headlines these days but on 15th September Bonhams had their best wine sale since the credit crunch. Prices have been growing steadily this year but one of the most notable features of the September sale was the strength of the market across the board.
Champagne is back in top form with a bottle of Krug 1938 selling for £2550 against a high estimate of £300 and a magnum of 1955 from the same house fetching £3450 on a high estimate of £500. As these were the first two lots of the sale things looked set for a brisk 750 lot sale and indeed they were, with Lafite 1996 fetching £7360 per dozen shortly afterwards.
Bonhams always like to have an interesting selection of lots in their wine sale, rather than a procession of the world's top 25 properties, and on this occasion there was keen buying across the board, Rhone, Burgundy, Italy, Germany and Cognac all getting a fair share of the action. The results of the Vintage Port were particularly pleasing with a bottle of Taylor 1948 being knocked down for just under £400.
The next sale is on 22nd October and entries are being accepted for the sale on 3rd December.

NOTES TO EDITORS
Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son and Neale UK. In August 2002, the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America and in August 2003, Goodmans, a leading Australian fine art and antiques auctioneer with salerooms in Sydney, joined the Bonhams Group of Companies. Today, Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals, through two major salerooms in London: New Bond Street, and Knightsbridge, and a further seven throughout the UK. Sales are also held in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Boston in the USA; and Switzerland, France, Monaco, Australia, Hong Kong and Dubai. Bonhams has a worldwide network of offices and regional representatives in 25 countries offering sales advice and valuation services in 57 specialist areas.
