Antiquities Turn In Sprightly Performance With £1.5M Sale At Bonhams As Tarzan Adds Strength

http://www.bonhams.com/antiquities

Bonhams latest sale of Antiquities on April 29 produced a stunning £1.5 result with 84 per cent of the items sold by value.

A packed saleroom saw brisk bidding for the 428 lots. Star of the sale was lot 54, a Roman mosaic panel, circa 2nd-3rd Century AD, depicting a Nereid sitting on the back of a bearded triton with a swimming dolphin nearby. Estimated to sell for £30,000 to £50,000 the mosaic outperformed this figure by reaching £168,000.

PENTHOUSE MAGAZINE’S ROMAN MARBLE TORSO MAKES £93,600

Another interesting item in the sale, a stunning Roman marble male torso, lot 32, estimated at £20,000 to £30,000 achieved £93,600. This beautiful sculpture was formerly in the collection of the founder of Penthouse Magazine.

TARZAN LINK AT BONHAMS ANTIQUITIES SALE ADDS STRENGTH

A Hellenistic terracotta funerary wall painting, lot 30, previously owned by the producer of the Tarzan films made £132,000. Seymour Weintraub, the Hollywood producer who launched Sean Connery’s career had hung the wall painting in his living room in California. Weintraub lived in California, and from the 1950s-70s built up a large and important collection of coins and antiquities. Between 1975-1979 the Weintraubs donated many pieces from their collection to the J. Paul Getty Museum, however the wall painting remained in the family's private collection until the present day.

In his heyday Sy Weintraub, against the advice of many, bought the film rights to Tarzan and revived the legendary jungle ape-man in movies titled `Tarzan and the Jungle Boy’, `Tarzan and the Valley of Gold’, `Tarzan’s Three Challenges’ and `Tarzan Goes To India’. The film ‘Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure’ launched Sean Connery’s career, laying the foundation for his defining role as James Bond 007.

Other items that created real interest included lot 241, a Byzantine gold and natural pearl pendant estimated at £6,000 to £8,000 which sold for £30,000 and an Egyptian bronze cat, lot 82, which made £26,400 against a pre-sale estimate of £8,000 to £12,000.

Chantelle Rountree, Head of Antiquities at Bonhams, said after the sale that she was very pleased with the result. “This sale shows that if you offer items of real interest with good provenance the market remains strong despite the general economic gloom. Collectors who are passionate about their subject know that items of this kind come along rarely.”

NOTES FOR EDITORS

Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son and Neale UK. In August 2002, the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America and in August 2003, Goodmans, a leading Australian fine art and antiques auctioneer with salerooms in Sydney, joined the Bonhams Group of Companies. Today, Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals, through two major salerooms in London: New Bond Street, and Knightsbridge, and a further seven throughout the UK.
