Interior Designer Catherine Connolly from Northwick Design talks about her love of auctions and current trends
http://www.bonhams.com/furniture
My favourite way of shopping for clients is using the salerooms. There are always some wonderful finds to be had. Ideally it is better to show the client the catalogue and then go alone to preview as quite often they will get over excited and want to buy additional things and then of course we then have to find places to put it all.
At the moment we have four important projects all requiring totally different styles so we could end up spending a great deal of time sourcing at the showrooms. As it’s only the two of us, Naomi and myself, we don’t have that sort
of time so we have to have a clear idea of what we are looking for and be very selective. Naomi will cover one type of sale and I will do another and that way we manage to cover what might be of interest and being able to look at all the items for sale online is a great timesaver.
I have always collected furniture and our home is a great mix of everything I like. This makes for a home rather than a showhouse. This is the way I like to furnish our client’s houses. Although pattern is starting to make a comeback, the look at the moment is still very minimalist, with clean defined architectural lines. We have found we are designing homes that flow from one soft colour to another. This creates a relaxed, light and open sense of space but you then need to add interest and impact using special pieces of furniture or artwork. The salesrooms are great places to source these and the sales at Bonhams are ideal for our clients as they are a great source of all kinds of items and there is always something of interest. In this coming sale on the 12th May we have our eye on several lovely pieces.
For instance, in the 12th May sale, a beautiful centre table such as Lot 281 would create a wonderful focal point in a light contemporary room. Or a pair of French fauteuils such as Lot 316 which we would then recover in a fabric to complement the room colours, are great value items.
We also have our eye on the little gentleman’s dressing table Lot 199 which would be ideal for a small London apartment.

NOTES FOR EDITORS
Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son and Neale UK. In August 2002, the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America and in August 2003, Goodmans, a leading Australian fine art and antiques auctioneer with salerooms in Sydney, joined the Bonhams Group of Companies. Today, Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals, through two major salerooms in London: New Bond Street, and Knightsbridge, and a further seven throughout the UK. Sales are also held in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Boston in the USA; and Switzerland, France, Monaco, Australia, Hong Kong and Dubai. Bonhams has a worldwide network of offices and regional representatives in 25 countries offering sales advice and valuation services in 57 specialist areas.
