Museum of Arts & Design Collection Highlights Bonhams’ December 20th Century Design Sale

http://www.bonhams.com/newyork

Highlighting Bonhams’ December 10, 2008 auction of 20th Century decorative arts and furniture in New York City is a selection of property offered on behalf of New York’s Museum of Arts & Design, as well as a wonderful selection of works that are the hallmark of Bonhams’ 20th Century Decorative Arts Department.

Collectors of 20th Century Art are eagerly awaiting the upcoming auction and its consignments of Arts & Crafts and Tiffany Studios Movements, continuing through to Vienna Secession, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernist Design, and Contemporary Studio works of art. Property from the Museum of Arts & Design, the country’s leading cultural institution dedicated to exploring the creative processes of contemporary artists and designers from around the world, presents an opportunity for collectors and other institutional curators to own works from their collection - property offered to benefit future acquisitions at the museum.

This superb selection includes furniture and decorative arts by many notable artists. Offered will be a fine Wharton Esherick cherrywood table (est. $20/30,000) and a handsome Wendell Castle Plaintain coffee table (est. $8/12,000). A selection of wood vessels by Ed Moulthrop, Bob Stocksdale, Mark Lindquist, and Ron Kent will also be presented. A rare Louise Bourgeois porcelain sculpture produced by Sevres and titled Fallen Women could bring as much as $5,000. The museum property is rounded out by an exciting collection of contemporary sculptures by Czechoslovakian glass artists Bretislav Novak, Rene Rubicek, Jaroslav Svoboda, and Dana Zamecnikova.

Highlighting the auction’s Tiffany Studios section will be an unusual Tiffany Favrile glass Turtleback Tile chandelier. Estimated at $50/70,000, this lot is expected to inspire very competitive bidding amongst collectors. Other exceptional objects in this section include a rare Tiffany Gentian table (est.$25/35,000), a fine Jack-in-the-Pulpit vase (est.$6/9,000), a selection of Tiffany Favrile glass and pottery from a private collection, and a very rare 1914 copy of “The Artwork of Louis Comfort Tiffany,” presented by Tiffany as a gift to his housekeeper Mary Ferguson.

Admirers of Art Nouveau should have their interests piqued by an excellent selection of French Cameo glass and a rare Abel Landry two-handled porcelain jardinière created for La Maison Moderne (est. $3/4,000).

A fine Art Deco carpet by master carpet designer Ivan Da Silva Bruhns estimated at $30/40,000 will be offered, as well as carpets from the prestigious firm of Jules Leleu.

Many impressive pieces of American Art Deco metalwork will also come to the Bonhams block. Of special interest to collectors will be a beautifully crafted Peter Muller Monk chromed-metal Normandie pitcher (est. $2/3,000) and an iconic Kem Weber copper and brass Zephyr clock (est. $1/1,500).

Those whose tastes run towards Modernist works will have a number of attractive lots to consider as well. Expected to spark fierce bidding is a rare Venini Murrina mirror which carries an estimate of $20/30,000 and a finely crafted Atelier Borsani parchment and maple sideboard which is estimated at $15/20,000. Also to be offered are a wonderful selection of lamps by Fontana Arte, Mazzega, and Venini.

Additional works will highlight the Contemporary section, alongside those from the Museum of Art and Design. Considered desirable is a George Nakashima walnut trestle dining table (est. $20/30,000), a blown glass sculpture by Greg Kallenberger (est.$8/12,000), a Pino Signoretto internally decorated figural work (est. $2/3,000), and a rare woven linen work: Fan with Symbols, by seminal American fiber artist Diane Itter (est $2,500/3,500). From a private collection of contemporary glass works assembled in the 1970s come a number of glass works by the “father of American contemporary glass” Harvey K. Littleton and his esteemed colleague Dominick Labino.

The illustrated auction catalog will be online for review and purchase in the weeks preceding the sale at www.bonhams.com/us. Previews open at Bonhams New York on December 6th - continuing daily until the auction.

NOTES FOR EDITORS
Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son and Neale UK. In August 2002, the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America and in August 2003, Goodmans, a leading Australian fine art and antiques auctioneer with salerooms in Sydney, joined the Bonhams Group of Companies. Today, Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals, through two major salerooms in London: New Bond Street, and Knightsbridge, and a further seven throughout the UK.
