Bonhams To Sell Collection Of Sporting Paintings From Grandson Of First Welsh Millionaire
LORD DAVIES – FOUNDING MEMBER OF LEAGUE OF NATIONS AND PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY TO LLOYD GEORGE
A group of 18th Century sporting paintings from the collected works of Lord Davies (1880-1944) the Welsh politician, public benefactor and grandson of the famous industrialist, David Davies, will go under the hammer in Bonhams Old Master Paintings sale on 9 July, New Bond Street, London. The collection features works by some of the most prominent artists in the field, including Thomas Spencer, Francis Sartorius and George Morland. The highlight is a portrait of Lord Essex’s racehorse Smiling Ball by John Wooton (1682-1764), estimated at £60,000-80,000. Smiling Ball, the winner of 18 of his 24 races between 1726 and 1730, is also depicted in the race in the background of the composition.
Lord Davies, the first Baron of Llandinam was the grandson of David Davies of Llandinam, Wales’s first self-made millionaire, whose fortune was derived from coal mining, railways and the docks. Lord Davies evidently inherited his grandfather’s energy – born at Llandinam, Montgomeryshire, he entered the House of Commons aged 26, fought in the First World War and was then appointed Parliamentary Secretary to David Lloyd George. A key participant in the international crusade for world peace after the war, he was a founder of the League of Nations and was the foremost advocate for the creation of an International Police Force to strengthen the League. Lord Davies was also a major campaigner against tuberculosis and in 1911 founded the Welsh National Association which developed a nation-wide scheme with many hospitals. Despite his many enterprises he is described in The Dictionary of Welsh Biography as “essentially a countryman keenly interested in sport” and his art collection clearly reflects his love of country pursuits.
DAVIES SISTERS TRANSFORMED WELSH MUSEUMS WITH IMPRESSIONIST COLLECTION
Lord Davies was not the only avid art collector in his family – his two sisters Gwendoline and Margaret amassed one of the largest and most important collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in Britain during the 1920s. Although they had no history of art appreciation the sisters favoured and collected works by Monet, Cézanne, van Gogh, Millet, Rodin, Turner and Corot. They bequeathed a total of 260 works to the National Galleries and Museums of Wales, including such significant works as Renoir’s Blue Lady, Monet’s Rouen Cathedral and Rodin’s The Kiss.
Lord Davies, like his sisters, was also a generous patron of a number of Welsh institutions, including the National Library of Wales, to which the present collection was recently on loan.
