Auction for Leach Pottery Restoration Project Raises £40,000 at Bonhams in London

Bonhams charity auction yesterday, (February 26th) on behalf of the Leach Pottery Restoration Fund raised £40,000 towards the refurbishment of the fabled potters studio in St Ives.

The sale which took place at Bonhams saleroom in New Bond Street, saw 150 people bidding briskly for the 107 lots provided by a distinguished group of international potters who acknowledge the influence of Bernard Leach on their work.

The sale total of £40,000, will all go directly to the Leach Pottery Restoration Fund, as Bonhams did not make any charge or add a premium.

The sale generated wide national and regional press interest, a clear indication that Leach remains an icon both in the UK and Japan as well as every place in which contemporary ceramics finds a home.

The respected Japanese TV company, NHK, filmed the sale for its Japanese home audience, many of whom know and revere the Leach name and work.

Marijke Jones, Head of Contemporary Ceramics at Bonhams, who curated the sale said: "This project has given me great personal satisfaction. Bonhams is delighted to be able to contribute in some small way to the restoration of Bernard Leach's Pottery, to see it restored and revitalised and continuing it ongoing role as a centre of excellence for the production of fine contemporary ceramics by leading exponents of the art."

The Leach Pottery Restoration Project has seen the pottery undergo a major capital development thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the European Regional Development Fund, Arts Council England South West, Rural Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Partnership, Penwith District Council, Cornwall County Council and St. Ives Town Council. However, additional funds are still needed to complete the fitting out of the new pottery studios and it is hoped that this auction will contribute significantly to the project achieving its aspirations.

Lady Carol Holland, Chair of the Restoration Project says, "It is tremendous to have so many highly respected potters contributing to this auction. This is testament to the memory and ethos of Bernard Leach and the money raised will help us create and support the final requirements for this invaluable restoration project."

With the Leach Pottery rebuild nearing completion and the launch planned for the 6th March, an exhibition that celebrates Bernard Leach's life and work is being prepared for show onsite by Emmanuel Cooper, Leach's biographer. Accredited as the father of the studio ceramic tradition, Bernard Leach is one of the biggest international names of the 20th Century in the field of ceramics.
