Exhibit 06 presents ‘Sensory Material’ at Bonhams Art House
mailto:press@bonhams.com?subject=Exhibit%2006
Sponsored by Virgin Atlantic
Bonhams is delighted to launch a new project Exhibit 06 at our salerooms in New Bond Street. This September Exhibit 06 presents an exhibition of Sensory Material - a three day exhibition of contemporary art, which explores the sensual interaction between the viewer and the object. It looks at the immediacy and dramatic impact of the work and the experience involved in seducing the viewer aesthetically. This takes place in the form of a conceptual interior. Exhibit 06 – Sensory Material is sponsored by Virgin Atlantic.
Curator of Bonhams Exhibit 06, Michelle Gonsalves, says “It is an exciting time for young art which is reinforced in this show. ‘Sensory Material’ shows that artworks of different mediums can be grouped and mixed together, so paintings, ceramics, sculpture, furniture design and performance can become one form. Exhibit 06 features emerging and established artists at Bonhams newly redesigned headquarters of New Bond Street. It is a striking space, which suits this project perfectly.”
Becky Struthers, a spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic says, “Virgin Atlantic is delighted to be sponsoring Bonhams Exhibit 06 - Sensory Material. This project presents dynamic and challenging works by talented artists who are continuing to grow in status. Our message in supporting contemporary art parallels our dedication as a company to innovation and creative thinking.”
The exhibited works are produced in a variety of materials including steel, bronze, food, fabric, clocks, perspex, wood, clock parts, vinyl records, paint, silicon, perfume, cardboard, plastic, ceramics, glue, animal fur, acrylic and photographs by artists: Zadok Ben David, Jane Edden, Skye Ferrante, Juan Fontanive, Marie Forbes, Jaime Gili, Keith Harrison, Jonathan Kearney, Gayle Chong Kwan, Brad Lochore, Caroline Lofthouse, Marta Marcé, Zara Matthews, Amy McGann, Heather Meyerratken, Polly Morgan, Teresa Narduzzo, Janet Nathan, Sophie Plowden, Nina Saunders, Katie Scott, Jane Simpson, Julie Verhoeven, and Jane Wilbraham.
Bonhams saleroom will be divided into the familiar spaces that represent the rooms of a conceptual home - a living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and garden using works by the exhibiting artists to define the nature of these spaces. Nina Saunder’s ‘Refuge’ chair can be found in the living room, ‘wide drips’ by Jonathan Kearney is on a television screen, Gayle Chong Kwan’s food C-prints and taxidermy using silver cutlery by Polly Morgan is in the kitchen and Keith Harrison’s ceramic electric blanket is tucked into the bedroom, Zadok Ben David’s ‘tree reflection figure’ and Julie Verhoeven’s birds nest is appropriately in the garden while Jane Simpson’s frozen radiator titled ‘Charming,’ continuously freezes and melts throughout the show.
The works are of a strong identity and personality and combine one or several of the five senses: touch, smell, sight, sound and taste are used to lure and tease the viewer to a new subversive reading of the work. It is dynamic and unexpected. The work acts as a “honey trap” of a new spatial, colourful and tactile awareness that will lead the viewer, through an exciting sensory experience.
Several of the artists are already attracting collectors such as Vanessa Branson, Kate Moss and Roland Emmerich. The exhibition opens with a private champagne reception attracting some 700 art enthusiasts. A performance piece, ‘The Dinner Party’ by artists Marie Forbes, Caroline Lofthouse, Katie Scott and Amy McGann will provide curious entertainment.
Exhibit 06 is organised by Michelle Gonsalves, Robin Hereford and Kate Jury at Bonhams Auctioneers.
