Orwell Letters Achieve £84,000 in Record Breaking Book Sale at Bonhams
www.bonhams.com/books
New Document
A cache of letters penned by George Orwell sold for a record £84,000 at a Bonhams Printed Books and Manuscripts auction, a figure double its pre-sale estimate. The sale room was buzzing with interest from buyers eager to acquire lots from this largely undocumented period in the writer’s life. All the winning bidders were present in the auction room which attracted mainly private or trade buyers from the UK.
Another strong result was a collection of photographs by Lewis Carroll which sparked considerable interest from collectors. The Portrait of Gertrude, Mary and Caroline Dykes (Lot 149) sold for a staggering £28,800, well over its estimate of £3,000. And an extremely rare portrait of Henry Hobson’s daughter Sarah (Lot 138) achieved a remarkable £16,000 far beyond its pre-sale estimate of £3,000.
David Park, Head of Bonhams Printed Books and Manuscripts department commented on the sale ‘We are delighted by the success of this sale and that the true value of this unique collection was reflected in these outstanding results.’

NOTES FOR EDITORS
Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son and Neale UK. In August 2002, the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America and in August 2003, Goodmans, a leading Australian fine art and antiques auctioneer with salerooms in Sydney, joined the Bonhams Group of Companies. Today, Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals, through two major salerooms in London: New Bond Street, and Knightsbridge, and a further seven throughout the UK. Sales are also held in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Boston in the USA; and Switzerland, France, Monaco, Australia, Hong Kong and Dubai. Bonhams has a worldwide network of offices and regional representatives in 25 countries offering sales advice and valuation services in 57 specialist areas.
