Sadequain visited the USA from May to August 1963, visting New York and Washington and exhibiting in the latter city. Group in Grey can be directly compared with similar compositions such as Group of Standing Figures of 1963 and Sitting Figures of 1964 (see Abdul Hamid Akhund et al, Sadequain: The Holy Sinner, Mohatta Palace Museum 2002, nos. 28 and 29). These works combine shadowy vertical and horizontal forms into an abstract lattice: there are hints of human figures as well as structures and, of course, the distorted calligraphic forms which would develop later.
