Regular Sales and Viewings

We hold sales in Bath ranging from general mixed sales to our prestigious Wales and West Country Sale. These are mostly traditional sales, comprising a large selection of 18th to 20th century furniture, decorative objects and collectibles for £100-£1,000 per lot, perfect for furnishing or complementing the décor of any period or modern house. At prices that compare favorably to most high street or departmental stores, shrewd property owners are turning to these sales to furnish their new flats and homes with stylish, affordable and good quality pieces that will last the test of time both in design and in wear.

Specialist sales which are most likely to appeal to more serious collectors include auctions of Furniture, Clocks, Works of art, Ceramics and Silver; Paintings and Works on Paper, and Contemporary Ceramics.

All the items included in a sale are available to view online although you are advised to view the sale yourself. We are happy to provide digital images and condition reports either over the telephone (01225 788 988) or by email ( bath@bonhams.com ) giving your e-mail address, the sale and lot numbers.

    Please note the following:

  • Condition reports should be requested no less than 24 hours prior to a sale, and absentee bids, no less than an hour prior to the start of the sale
  • Should you wish to consider selling or purchasing items at auction, please contact the office at any time during the year, to discuss the next suitable sale for your needs.
  • Please contact the office or view the online catalogue to verify timings & details.

Contemporary Ceramics
The Contemporary Ceramics Department at Bonhams are world leaders in this field. Although based in New Bond Street, London, our sales programme is supplemented by three further sales a year in Bath. With two sales dedicated to Contemporary Ceramics In January and October as well as a strong section in the prestigious Wales and West Country Sale in June, there will be a variety of lots on offer. These range from early works of the Leach school to contemporary works by post-war European artists. Furthermore, with the new 'no estimate - no reserve' policy in place on any items below £100 there is a great opportunity to acquire some real bargains.

Past Sales

The Wales and West Country Sale
Monday 25 June 2007
Bath

A popular sale celebrating the artistic heritage and tradition of a nation and region rich in diversity. Bonhams are now accepting entries for the fourth annual sale.

Now well established in the auction calendar for collectors and buyers of all descriptions, this year's sale will be of particular, poignant interest to those who have followed the artistic career of Sir Kyffin Williams (918-2006). Some stunning paintings by the artist including an oil on canvas titled Rocks at Glyderfach, estimate: £30,000-40,000 (as seen below), have already been consigned and will make their mark following the artist's death in September 2006.

Represented too will be artists and crafts of the whole of the South West including the ceramics of studio potters such as Leach, Cardew, Maltby and Troika. Fine Porcelain from the Swansea and Nantgarw factories will be complemented by Welsh dressers and other Welsh oak, while clocks and works of art will be contrasted with the elegant, quality lines found in the furniture of Shapland and Petter, Barnstaple. Books, maps and topographical paintings from all around the region ranging from 17th century to present day will also be welcome entries.

Religious Fever Grips Buyers at Bonhams in Bath

Book collectors battled at auction for a highly important collection of books and manuscripts by Joanna Southcott, “The Prophetess of Exeter”, and her followers, which finally sold at Bonhams in Bath today (Tuesday 13 February 2007) for £16,450.

One of the most controversial women of her time, Joanna Southcott (1750-1814) was a Devonshire farmer’s daughter who believed she possessed supernatural gifts and in 1814, announced that she would give birth to the new Messiah. Revered by as many as 100,000 followers at one point, Joanna Southcott clearly continues to fascinate many up until today as shown by the interest in the collection sold by Bonhams.

World record holder’s commemorative salver to be auctioned by Bonhams in Bath
A silver salver given to Arthur Newton (1883-1959) to commemorate his record breaking 100-mile run from Bath to London in 1934 is to be sold by Bonhams Auctioneers in Bath on Monday 26 February.

Born in 1883 in Weston-Super-Mare, Newton was one of the world’s greatest long distance runners. Credited as having revolutionised the sport, he was a late beginner, only starting to run seriously in 1922, at the age of 38. He then proceeded to set nearly all distance records during the 1920s and ‘30s.
