Bonhams have had the pleasure of being instructed by Stephen Duncan and Chris Powell of KordaMentha in their capacity as receivers and managers of Owston Nominees No. 2 Pty Ltd. to sell the second part of The Owston Collection in Sydney in 14 November at the Byron Kennedy Hall in Moore Park. Highlights of the second part of the collection include; a number of paintings by Norman Lindsay and Richard Browne, a important pair of early 19th century Russian amethyst cut glass and ormolu vases, a monumental Victorian silver centre piece, a rare traveling drinking glass formerly the property of Queen Marie Louise, wife of Napoleon I, a collection of objects d'art and a number of animal skins and taxidermy.
The Owston Collection Part I produced some outstanding results achieving a total of over AU$13.1 million. The Owston Collection comprised of 1321 lots, which were sold at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney over two days on 25 & 26 June following 22 hours on the rostrum. Over 1400 people registered to bid at the sale following extensive viewing of one of the broadest ranging private collections to have ever been offered for auction in Australia. Single owner collections on this scale are extremely rare and it represented a discerning eye for quality and the eclectic, and a passion for all things antiquarian on the part of the collector. Over 80% of the collection was purchased by Australian buyers, with overseas bidders buying the rest.
The sale included a large selection of 18th and 19th Century English, Continental and Australian Furniture, highlights of which included: A rare set of twelve George III collector's cabinets in which the great British naturalist Sir Joseph Banks stored his Australian geological specimens (AU$300,000), A fine Irish Regency mahogany four pedestal dining table (AU$288,000), A fine Russian 19th Century gilt and patinated bronze gueridon (AU$156,000) and a fine Gothic style George IV double breakfront mahogany bookcase attributed to Gillows (AU$192,000).
A few of the painting highlights of the auction were; A portrait of Colonel Thornton, Marquess Dupont by Philip Reinagle (British 1794-1833) and Sawrey Gilpin (British 1733-1807) (AU$348,000), A painting by the Australian artist Norman Lindsay (1879-1969) entitled 'The Sisters' (AU$288,000), Three early 19th Century paintings of aborigines by the Irish convict artist, Richard Browne which sold respectively for AU$45,600, AU$50,400, AU$52,800, and a painting by the Australian artist James Turner (1850-1908) entitled 'Australian pioneers' (AU$122,400).
In addition to some exceptional pieces of English, Continental and Australian furniture, paintings and object d'art, the sale also included a large selection of taxidermy, which caught the attention of an extensive array of collectors, museums and private individuals. Items of note were a rare Javan rhinoceros trophy head by renowned taxidermist Rowland Ward (AU$108,000), A rare pair of extinct adult male and female huia (AU$36,000) and an amusing display of cats and monkeys entitled 'The Barber's Shop' (AU$24,000).
