Muonionalusta Meteorite – Incomparable Complete Specimen with Dimensional Widmanstatten Pattern
Nickel-Iron – Fine Octahedrite
Norrbotten, Sweden

Muonionalusta is an iron-nickel meteorite found in Norrbotten, Sweden in 1906. Classified as a fine octahedrite, it has one of the most beautiful Widmanstatten patterns of all meteorites, as exemplified by the present specimen. Widmanstatten patterns form when the two alloys of nickel kamacite and taenite separated in the iron core of the large asteroid that was destroyed by collision with another asteroid in the asteroid belt billions of years ago. This pattern occurs only when the iron core cools at a rate of just a few degrees per million years and is not found on any iron-nickel metals on Earth.

The present spectacular, complete Muonionalusta meteorite has been laboriously sand blasted to display a unique three-dimensional Widmanstatten pattern. This presentation dramatically illustrates the process of a cubic taenite crystal structure transforming into an octahedrite crystal structure when kamacite grows on the eight corners of the taenite cube. The gunmetal colored meteorite shows numerous geometric structures formed at every angle. Here is a unique, spectacular meteorite, which illustrates what Widmanstatten patterns look like throughout the meteorite. Weighing 31.38 pounds; measuring 10 x 7 x 4in
