An Unusual Brass-Barrelled Blunderbuss With Neopolitan Miquelet-Lock Mechanism
Late 18th Century
With two-stage barrel turned and flared at the muzzle and fitted with a replacement spring bayonet above, the breech stamped 'London' and with a line of shaded beading at the rear, tang with bayonet-catch, border engraved flat bevelled lock decorated with foliage overall, deeply stamped with crowned maker's mark of Gennaro Scarafone of Naples (Neue Støckel, p.1112), and dated 1788 on the steel, figured full stock (minor chip and split in front of the lock), stamped 'R.Y.L.' in front of the trigger-guard finial, border engraved brass mounts comprising shaped flat side-plate, vacant escutcheon, butt-plate with foliate rocaille on the heel tang, trigger-guard with acorn finial and engraved with a flower-head on the bow, turned brass ramrod-pipes, brass sling loops, and later ramrod, Tower private proof marks
