2 volumes. Folio (583 x 433 mm). [6], 134, Liij pp; 143 numbered engraved plates, some double-page; half-titles in each volume. Contemporary diced Russia with the arms of the Duke of Newcastle to the covers, rebacked, retaining spines, new endpapers. Spines dried and flaked. Some foxing throughout.
Provenance: The Duke of Newcastle (armorial binding).

FIRST EDITION OF THE FOUNDATIONAL WORK OF EGYPTOLOGY, "the first to reveal the richness of Egyptian art to Europe" (Blackmer). Highly popular and influential, Denon's Voyage was quickly republished in various editions due to intense demand, and was instrumental in the rise of the Egyptian revival in French decorative arts. These large folio volumes bear the arms of the Duke of Newcastle, with an autograph letter addressed to him laid-in, from Houlditch & Co offering deep apologies for an unfortunate incident with one of their carriages.
