Two parts in one volume. Folio (536 x 420 mm). Title, dedication, preface, 26 hand-colored tinted lithographed plates heightened with varnish, each mounted on card, each with 1 p of text (plate 9 has 2 pp, and plate 14 has 3 pp), many bound out of order, along with some text leaves. Library cloth, with usual stamps, each plate stamped in the margin, sometimes just touching the border, but never the plate, each titled neatly in pencil just inside the border, not affecting plate. Chipping to the edges and corners of leaves, including mounts.

FIRST EDITION, RARE ISSUE WITH PLATES COLORED AND MOUNTED ON CARD. Published in two parts, here combined: British India and the Punjab, and Kashmir and the Alpine Punjab. Hardinge was present in India in 1845 when the Sikh army crossed the Sutlej and invaded British territory. He served as private secretary to his father, Sir Henry Hardinge, first Viscount of Lahore, who was Governor-General of India at the time. The plates are mostly fine views, but also include portraits of the Maharajah Dulip Singh, Rajah Lal Sing, Gulab Sing, and Sheik Imam-ud-Din Runjur Sing. Abbey Travel 472; Tooley 244.
