Kawaraban news-sheets showing foreigners and their possessions.
[Edo: c.1860.] Two Kawaraban woodblock news-sheets, each 220 x 295 mm. the first in 4 sections titled "Western Products and Strange Things," with images of an English Captain, a black sailor, a microscope (Dutch style) and a mummified body wrapped in sheets, the second showing a Captain's wife and her wolfhound dog, alongside an American Flag, and a depiction of four Russian coins recto and verso, two coins dated 1843 and 1854. Slight spotting to outer margins.

Two interesting Japanese Kawaraban documenting some of the foreigners who visited Japan's shores in the 1850s as the country opened up to the west.

Payment Notices
