Lot Details
COOK IN TAHITI: PLAYBILL.
Capitän Cook, oder Die Wilden auf der Insel Otahaiti, eine grosse Pantomime mit Märschen, Pyramiden und Evolutionen. [Germany, c.1840.]
Playbill, 420 x 510 mm, for the performance of a dramatization of the story of Captain Cook in Tahiti, illustrated by a large woodcut showing scenes from the drama, including Tahitians demonstrating an acrobatic human pyramid, a battle between British sailors and the Islanders, Cook being tortured by the Tahitian King, and (it would seem) Cook selling the Tahitian Queen into slavery. Fold marks, creases, some browning, with a pinhole perforation in the woodcut area. Matted and framed.

There were many popular dramas across Europe in the early 19th century depicting fanciful stories of Cook's exploits, most of them unconstrained by historical fact.
