CORTES, MARTIN. 1532–1589.
Autograph Letter Signed ("El Marques"), 1 p, docketed to the verso with a note, 4to (307 x 214 mm), January, 1566, folded, some staining, offsetting.

RARE LETTER FROM MARTIN CORTES, SECOND MARQUES DE LA VALLE DE OAXACA, the son and heir of conquistador Hernan Cortes, signed as "El Marques" (like his father), sending 50 rams to the friars of Yecapixtla. On the verso, a friar of Yecapixtla confirms receipt of the rams and signs, dated March 1566. Cortes would be arrested later the same year for his role in the so-called Avila-Cortes conspiracy, in which some of the sons of the conquistadors, reacting to changes in the encomienda system that threatened their way of life, attempted to overthrow Spanish rule in the colony and install Don Martin as leader of New Spain. While many of the conspirators were summarily executed, Don Martin and his brother were exiled to Spain after a lengthy trial.
