8vo (164 x 104 mm). ä8 A8-Eee8 Fff4. 7 engraved plates. Contemporary vellum, titled in ink to the spine, some soiling. Light dampstaining, upper edge of engraved title trimmed at upper corner, 2mm across expanding to 6mm at the edge. Some darkening to a few leaves. Offsetting from engravings.

RARE SECOND IMPRESSION OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST AND MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS ON THE EUROPEAN COLONIZATION OF BRAZIL. D'Abbeville's account offers the first printed description of Maranhao (Sabin), and "gives us valuable information concerning the religion and astronomy of the Tupis, not to be found in any other writings (Borba de Moraes)." The final part of the book contains an account of the journey of six Tupinamba Indians, represented in six of the engravings, to France to be baptized at Court, where they were given a tremendous reception. Unfortunately, they were also given European diseases and three of them perished before they could be properly honored.

A veritable rarity, the historians Alfred Métraux and Jacques Lafaye, in their introduction to the 1963 edition of the present work, note only 10 copies still in existence: "il ne reste plus actuellement qu'une dizaine d'exemplaires au monde de l'édition originale, celle de l'imprimerie de François Huby à Paris." As early as 1878, Leclerc calls this edition as important as it is rare: "ouvrage aussi important que rare" (Leclerc). ABPC and Rare Book Hub reveal only one complete copy at auction in the last 45 years (Sotheby's, New York, November 12, 2007, lot 21). Sabin 4; Borba de Moraes I, pp 5-7; Leclerc, Bibiotheca Americana 1570.
