Footnotes

  • 'Animus' Sculptural Centrepiece was exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum as part of the celebrated Silver Speaks 'Idea to Object' exhibition, organised by the Contemporary British Silversmiths.

KEVIN GREY's unique approach to design and execution has earned him the prestigious Goldsmiths' Company Award three times. His groundbreaking and exciting work combines cutting edge modern technology such as laser welding and TIG welding combined with traditional silversmithing techniques.

His work is based on the philosophical idea of the animus, 'a tendency or inclination towards a definite, sometimes unavoidable goal'. He is concerned with the idea of a continuous revolving thought, which demands total absorption until the solution is found. He thinks through his work continuously, but makes no drawings beforehand. He hand-forms strips of silver, TIG welding them together and confronting complex technical issues as they arise. This fractured and tormented process led to the final form of the surface of Animus.

Kevin Grey has been working in silver since 2007 having moved from the world of the luxury automotive industry, where for over 20 years he produced hand made bespoke pieces for Rolls Royce, Bentley and Morgan Motor Company. The processes he uses couple traditional metalworking skills with new technology.

Kevin's pieces are in collections such as the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Goldsmiths' Company Modern Collection, National Museum Wales, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, as well as major private collections around the world as well as major private collections around the world. He is represented in the US by Galerie Maison Gerard, New York. His work attracted wide press acclaim during the Silver Speaks exhibition in the V&A and appeared in publications such as Wallpaper*, Town & Country and the FT How to Spend It.
