1921-S 50C MS65 PCGS
Fully lustrous and mostly brilliant, the lovely surfaces of this Gem Walking Liberty half dollar are free of most distracting abrasions. Overall the fields are pristine and the quality and eye appeal both suggest an even higher Mint State grade. A bold strike that includes emerging definition over Liberty's head and left hand rounds out the impressive attributes of this important piece.

The original mintage of 548,000 pieces is roughly double that of the 1921 and 1921-D issues, but fewer of the San Francisco issue were saved from circulation at the time, hence their rarity in all Mint State grades. Finding a 1921-S with a full strike and strong luster, like this, combined with the Gem level of surface quality is a masterful stroke of luck and any collector would do well to secure this stunning jewel for an advanced date and mint collection as did our consignor. Experts now estimate only 150-200 1921-S survivors in all Mint State grades, such a paltry total confirming that this issue suffered a much higher rate of attrition through circulation than its 1921-dated counterparts from Philadelphia and Denver.

The present Gem is lightly coated in golden patina with scattered russet accents at the left side of the obverse and on the reverse too. Under this thin veil of natural color, the surfaces are quite frosty with especially clean fields and show only a couple of trivial blemishes on Liberty's skirt. The strike is well-executed for the issue if one keeps in mind the normal areas of mushiness on Liberty's head and the eagle's trailing leg feathers. Overall, this wonderfully preserved example has solid Gem credentials and would be a terrific centerpiece for the advanced collector of this popular series. PCGS Population: 15 in 65, 3 finer.
