  • Literature
This cabinet on stand is illustrated in V. Jones Martin, At Home in Savannah, Great Interiors, Savannah, 1978, 429 Bull (Mercer House), p. 58.

James Arthur "Jim" Williams was born in Gordon, Georgia in1930. After studying interior design in Florida, he went on to work for antiques dealers in New Orleans and Savannah before opening his own gallery at the age of 23. Two years later he began buying and rehabilitating historic buildings in crumbling downtown Savannah. Williams was one of Savannah's earliest and most enduring preservationists. During the next 30 years he restored more than 50 notable structures including his own famous residence, Mercer House.

Mercer House, originally built for General Hugh Weedon Mercer, great grandfather of American lyricist Johnny Mercer in the 1860s, had fallen into disrepair by the time Williams acquired it in 1969. It took more than two years of meticulous renovation to achieve the personal standard required for Williams to consider it his home. The back carriage house served as his gallery and restoration studio where he himself and his craftsmen worked in gilding, finishes, veneers and structural repairs. Williams also went on frequent buying trips to Europe and participated in all of the principle auction houses major sales. Over the course of his lifetime he formed what was perhaps the greatest private collection of decorative in fine art ever assembled by a Savannah resident.
