Lot Details
Battle of the Bulge: Bullet-riddled village sign for Basse-Bodeux, Belgium.
A 1940s road sign for the village of Basse-Bodeux, rusted and worn, with 5 bullet holes peppered across the face, probably recovered from the road side undergrowth many years after the battle. 200 x 805 mm.
Provenance: A Belgian Collector; The Mountfitchet Castle Museum, Essex.

A fine relic of the Battle of the Bulge where fierce fighting raged across the Ardennes for 2 weeks or more in late December 1944. On the night of the 19th December, the 82nd Airborne parachuted into Werbomont, in the Ardennes near Bastogne. They had originally planned to join the 101st at Bastogne, but instead they split forces and the 505th occupied the villages of Haute-Bodeux and Basse-Bodeux on the 19th/20th December and soon came up against the left flank of the German 7th Armored Division. The battle was fiercely fought village by village, but eventually the Germans were forced to withdraw.
