RAF BIGGIN HILL BASE FLAG [1940s].
A heavy cotton RAF base flag, with RAF roundel, with approximately 52 inch rope halyard and a pair of 2 inch metal snap hooks, with an engraved plaque attached to a 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch wooden mount, military-used condition with some wear, bullet holes, and staining. 870 x 920 mm.
The RAF base at Biggin Hill near London figured prominently in the Battle of Britain. This flag was flown there and is dotted with bullet holes from strafing by low-flying enemy aircraft. Early on in the Battle of Britain the Luftwaffe concentrated on destroying the British airfields and airforce.
