1968 FIAT 850 Special Shellette Beach Car
Coachwork by Giovanni Michelotti

Chassis no. 0975928
Wonderfully redolent of La Dolce Vita Italy, the 'beach car' found favour as courtesy transport for patrons of luxury hotels and golf courses, or for use ashore after one had docked one's yacht on the Italian or French Riviera. Much rarer than Ghia's Jolly, the Shellette beach car offered here is the work of prolific stylist Giovanni Michelotti. Originally built using DAF running gear, the Shellette was later based on the FIAT 850 and in this form was a much more practical and faster vehicle than the Jolly. Famous customers included the Dutch Royal Family, who used a DAF-based Shellette, and Jacqueline Onassis, who drove a FIAT-based model on the Onassis' private island of Skorpios. It is estimated that around 80 Shellettes of all types were built, with some ten believed to survive.

This rare Shellete was first owned by one Dino Fabbri of Milan, who sold it in 1968 to the Imperiale Palace Hotel in Santa Margherita Ligure on the Italian Riviera where it has remained ever since, serving as a beach car for VIP guests. Described by the vendor as in generally good condition, the Shellette is un-restored, though it should be noted that the original wicker seats have been replaced with wooden ones although that is obviously reversible. The car is offered with a bill of sale and a copy of its original Italian libretto. A fabric sunshade roof is included in the sale.
