Ex-Mika Häkkinen, Finnish Championship-winning
1986 Birel T17 135cc Kart
Chassis no. 0125
This Italian-built Birel kart was driven by Mika Häkkinen, who won his 4th Finnish Championship (Formula A 100cc class) with it in 1986. Häkkinen first raced karts when he was only five years old, winning his first race in 1975. In 1981 he claimed his first major title, the Finnish Karting Championship (85cc Formula Mini Series) and moved on to the Formula Nordic 100cc class for 1983, taking the title in his debut season. Häkkinen dominated the 100cc class for the next few years before graduating to Formula Ford, winning the Finnish, Swedish and Nordic championships in 1987. Moving up to Formula 3 for 1989, he showed equal promise, winning the prestigious British F3 Championship in 1990. After two relatively fruitless years with Lotus in Formula 1, he commenced an eight-year spell with McLaren in 1993, which would bring him back-to-back World Championships in 1998 and 1999.

Häkkinen used this kart for Formula A in Finland and Formula K abroad. The engine currently fitted is a 135cc Komet, which was used in the international class Formula K. This Birel has been retained by the vendor, Finnkart proprietor, Petri Pirkola, since Häkkinen's last kart race in Spain at the end of 1986. Offered with Mika's signed certificate of authenticity, it represents a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire a significant piece of this great Formula 1 Champion's personal history.
