Footnotes

  • The following six lots are the property of the late Professors Sir Kenneth and Lady Noreen Murray, sold to benefit The Darwin Trust of Edinburgh

The coats of arms represented on the back of each chair appear to relate to the Blennerhassett Knight family.

The de Lowdham family were Lords of the Manor of Loudham, County Suffolk; Frenze, County Norfolk and Kelvedon, County Essex for many years until the manors passed to the Blennerhassett family by marriage circa. 1423.

The coat of arms of Kelvedon and Lowdham can be seen alongside the arms of Blennerhassett and Orton in a portrait of Sir Thomas Blennerhassett Knight, of Frenze, Norfolk (c.1461-1531), perhaps indicating these chairs are part of a set of four once showing all four coats of arms.
