Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
Mrs Martine Ronaldson, an engagement gift from the artist in 1907. Cadell and her husband, Thomas Martine Ronaldson, had painted together in Paris. Ronaldson won a medal at the Salon in 1926
    Thence by descent
Sale; Phillips, London, June 19, 1984 lot 27
    From a Californian Estate

    EXHIBITED:
London, The Fine Art Society, October-December 1983

The Cadell family emigrated from Edinburgh to Munich in 1907, and this imposing oil shows the artist on the threshold of finding his own style. His early work generally shows the influence of the Impressionists, and this example retains echoes of Monet.
