Footnotes

  • The Ferrers were a powerful Norman family but fell out of favour when they rebelled against Henry III. Tiles with their coat of arms have been found in Westminster Abbey and Sir Ralph Ferrers was involved in killing a fugitive seeking sanctuary inside the Abbey in 1378. The alphabet tile is in Lombardic capital letters and reads from right to left, the example in Elizabeth Eames, Catalogue of Mediaeval Lead-glazed Tiles (1980), Vol.1, no.17 reads from left to right. The artisans that made the present example were probably illiterate and failed to reverse the design when cutting the stamp. A similar example is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, accession EC.16-1939
