Footnotes

  • Literature: David Knell, English Country Furniture 1500 - 1900 (2000), illustrates several comparable winged armchairs pp. 286 - 287. The author notes that 'armchairs of this type were apparently intended only as a comfortable fireside seat', explaining that the popular generic term 'lambing chair' seems to have no relevance other than that, since many have originated from sheep-farming regions such as the Yorkshire Dales and North Wales, many would have belonged to shepherds.
