SHAKESPEARE (WILLIAM)
Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies... Unto Which is Added, Seven Plays, Never Before Printed in Folio, FOURTH FOLIO EDITION, lacks portrait and 2 leaves (*Dddd1 and *Dddd6, the second replaced with duplicate leaf from Macbeth), title with all below the woodcut device torn away, opening 8 leaves on stubs, approximately 40 leaves with repairs to margins (6 remargined), 7 leaves with small hole touching letters, occasional light dampstaining, spotting or stains, numerous ink annotations and corrections (mostly in the margins, some initialed), ownership inscriptions of Francis family members on front free endpaper and on title, pigskin by Sidney Cockerell [Wing S2915; Pforzheimer 910; Bartlett 123a], folio (365 x 225mm.), [H. Footnotes

  • The fourth folio edition includes Pericles and the six spurious plays, and was printed on larger sheets than the earlier folios. A note on the front free endpaper reads "This Book must never go out of my family. It was for many years the Delight of my good Father's life to study and correct. P. Francis, Sheen, 8th June, 1793". There are numerous corrections and annotations in a neat, legible hand. For example, a passage in The Tempest has been crossed through and the following added: "Shakespear could not have written such senseless drollery... unnatural buffoonery"; and beside the opening of Act 3, Scene 2 of Measure for Measure: "In the simplicity of the ancient shows upon our stage it was common to bring in two figures, one representing a fool, the other death... taken by W. unacknowledged".
