Footnotes

  • Saint-Non's celebrated work "was the first work of its type to appear in France and it created a vogue for the 'voyage pittoresque'" (Blackmer). Saint-Non, a gifted amateur engraver, travelled extensively in Italy for this work during 1759-1761, in the company of Fragonard and Hubert Robert. Saint-Non also arranged for Vivant Denon, then living in Naples, to engage artists to provide drawings of important scenes not seen by the author himself. Publication was by subscription in fascicules, but Saint-Non ruined himself in producing "one of the monuments of French 18th century book-production".

The present copy is one of the early issues, with plates 84, 85, 86, 87 & 88 in volume 3 marked as 24, 11, 12, 24bis & 13. It contains the scarce plate of priapic bronzes in volume 2 (suppossedly suppressed by the King of Naples), and the 14 plates of 'doubles médailles' in volume 3, part 2, which are repetitions of the culs-de-lampe used at the end of the fourteen chapters.

Provenance: Thomas Philip Earl de Grey, Wrest Park, armorial bookplate.
