Footnotes

  • THE FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF GALILEI, BOUND BY ANTHONY GARDNER. Gardner's apologia, written in his fine calligraphic hand, provides a detailed description of the restoration and rebinding of the books:

"Memorandum:/ These two volumes had been bound before and the marginal notes had been shaved. In the rebinding for Dr. Guthlac Wilson, all stains have been safely reduced; all leaves hot sized; tears mended; missing pieces feathered on; broken folds guarded and the collation checked up with the copy in the British Museum: The edges have been scraped fair only, except that 1/8th of an inch has been taken from the bottom of vol: 11 to make the vol: uniform with vol: i: Hollow backs have been provided, as in the previous binding, to facilitate opening: The leather is native niger kid, chosen, together with the dull-gilt edges & the old Venetian tooling, as being compatible with the age and format of the books./ Anthony Gardner, Binder/ Chiddingfold, Surrey./ Mch: Año: 1953./ No. 340."

Provenance: Dr. Guthlac Wilson, engineer, prize copy awarded to him in 1942/3 by The Institution of Civil Engineers. Together with William Scott, Wilson was responsible for the Royal Festival Hall in London, together with the Chiswick and Twickenham Bridges.
