Footnotes

  • Provenance: Josephine Houlcroft, aunt of the vendor, who was for many years organist and member of the choir at Our Lady of the Angels and St. Peter in Chains, Stoke, where Tolkien's son John acted as parish priest between 1966 and 1987. Tolkien signed the books in the presbytery during a visit he paid to his son. The vendor recounts: "The story goes my dad sent her [the aunt] in to get the books signed. She didn't know anything about the books or the story, just got them signed - and he was quite glad not to have to talk about them!".
