Footnotes

  • 'EAU ET GAZ A TOUS LES ÉTAGES': DUCHAMP'S FIRST CATALOGUE RAISONNÉE, WITH ONE OF HIS TRADE-MARK READY-MADES ON THE COVER. The theme of water and gas appealed to Duchamp from his early days, so his version of the blue plaque, a common sight on apartment blocks wanting to emphasize their modern conveniences in the late nineteenth century, was an obvious choice to decorate the cover of the deluxe editions of this, his first Catalogue raisonnée. Containing some 122 plates, the catalogue was compiled by Robert Lebel in cooperation with Duchamp, their close collaboration being well documented in a reprint of the catalogue made by the Centre Georges Pompidou in 1996.

Of the deluxe version, 137 copies in all were produced (including 10 special copies and 17 for the author, artist and collaborators). In addition to the plaque being initialled by Duchamp, the self-portrait, created by tearing paper around a metal template, is signed by him. The plate of La mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même ('The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even', commonly know as Le Grand verre) is not signed by him, as is sometimes the case.

    Provenance: Private Collection.
