Footnotes

  • AN FINE COPY WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED AND SPECIALLY BOUND FOR THE EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE, 1880. The additional material includes 10 different portraits of each of the authors, and sets of plates from the Compleat Angler editions of John Hawkins (1760), Samuel Bagster (1808 and 1815), and John Major (1823-1824), along with numerous engraved views of significant places referred to in the text. Bound in at the end is a first edition of Thomas Westwood's pioneering bibliography of the Angler, 1861. "Westwood became acquainted with and was greatly influenced by Izaak Walton through reading [Charles] Lamb's copy of the Compleat Angler. Reading Hawkins's 1760 edition Westwood regarded it, in biblical allegory, as 'my chief treasure, pearl of price'" (ODNB).

Provenance: Thomas Westwood (1814-1888, angling bibliographer), bookplate; William Waldorf, Viscount Astor (1848-1919), bookplate.

Exhibited: Exposition nationale de 1880, Brussels, small stamp on front free endpaper. Thomas Westwood was presumably responsible for having this copy, bound by one of the most skilful Belgian book binders of the period, included in the Exhibition, as he had resided and worked in Brussels since the 1840s.
